First Attempt at a Podcast

Many hours...lots of mis-steps ...a messy but at least an attempt at a podcast. I will leave this up for a couple days and then try to replace it with a more meaningful posting.

  1. Congrats on the podcast. Now you have the basics and it just keeps getting easier from here. :)

  2. Nice job on the podcast. Some very interesting ideas to think about.

If problems are caused by the way something is being used, or rather mis-used (cellphones, Ipods, Pokemon cards, whatever it might be), isn't it more productive to look for ways to model and encourage appropriate use rather than trying to forbid its use? Banning it just increases the distance between school and real life - surely not what we want if our goal is creating a cohesive community of lifelong learners?

When my son was in fourth grade his school banned Game Boys which had previously been allowed at recess and on the bus. The following year he organized a petition and finally convinced the principal to allow one Game Boy Day. The principal decided that only games rated E (Everyone) would be allowed. Seems reasonable. Trouble was my son's favorite game had been released a few years earlier when the E rating was called K-A (Kids to Adults). Even though the K-A rating was clearly defined on the box the principal was unwilling to bend - only E games allowed. What did that teach my son about the value of following the rules and working within the system?
